Calvet Armchair by BD Barcelona
The Calvet armchair was designed by architect Antoni Gaudí for BD Barcelona.
Designed by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1901 for the Casa Calvet in Barcelona, the Calvet chair is one of the few pieces of furniture created by the Catalan architect. More than a century after its creation, it remains an iconic piece that translates the organic and expressive language characteristic of his architectural work into furniture.
Its design is distinguished by sculpted forms with fluid lines. The openwork backrest (recognizable by its heart-like shape), the curved armrests, and the generous proportions of the wood reflect an approach where aesthetics, comfort, and craftsmanship come together naturally.
Serving as both a dining chair and a collector’s piece, the Calvet makes a strong visual statement while retaining a timeless elegance.
Finishes and formats
The Calvet chair is crafted from solid oak using traditional techniques faithful to those employed in Gaudí’s time. Its structure consists of several elements assembled with precision to form the complex curves that define its identity.
The woodworking highlights the material’s full richness, from the sculpted lines of the backrest to the enveloping armrests. Every detail underscores the craftsmanship required to create this historic piece.
Each chair is numbered and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the director of the Gaudí Chair, attesting that it is a faithful reproduction that conforms to the original model designed by Antoni Gaudí.
Dimensions: 65 x 52 x 95 cm
About BD Barcelona
Founded in 1972 in Barcelona, BD Barcelona Design quickly established itself as a leading name in contemporary design thanks to its free-spirited and experimental approach. From its very beginnings, the brand has produced and published the creations of its founders as well as those of their creative circle, operating with complete independence.
A leading figure in Catalan architecture, Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) is renowned for his innovative approach to form, materials, and craftsmanship. His work, of which the Sagrada Família is the most famous example, continues to influence architects and designers around the world.
Although primarily associated with architecture, Gaudí placed great importance on furniture, which he conceived as a natural extension of his spaces. The Calvet chair illustrates this vision through a sculptural design in which every detail contributes to the balance between function, comfort, and artistic expression.
More than just a seat, the Calvet chair is a testament to Spain’s design heritage and the artisanal craftsmanship that has accompanied Gaudí’s work for over a century.
