Calvet Chair by BD Barcelona
The Calvet Chair was designed by architect Antoni Gaudí for BD Barcelona.
Created by Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1901 for the Casa Calvet in Barcelona, the Calvet Chair exemplifies the Catalan master’s unique approach, in which architecture, furniture, and craftsmanship are one. Originally designed to complement the interiors of the famous Barcelona building, it remains today one of the most iconic furniture designs in his body of work.
Its design is distinguished by a sculpted backrest with organic lines and a silhouette that combines structural simplicity with rich detail. The distinctive shape of the backrest, inspired by the natural curves so dear to Gaudí, gives the chair a strong identity while ensuring comfort suitable for everyday use.
Both functional and expressive, the Calvet chair illustrates Gaudí’s ability to transform an everyday object into a true work of design.
Finishes and formats
Crafted from solid oak, the Calvet chair is made using traditional methods faithful to those employed at the time of its creation. Each component is meticulously crafted to recreate the curves, proportions, and details envisioned by Antoni Gaudí in the early 20th century.
The wood reveals its full richness through the sculpted lines of the backrest and the precision of the joints. This attention to craftsmanship preserves the authenticity of the original design while ensuring the chair’s durability.
Each chair is numbered and comes with a certificate signed by the director of the Gaudí Chair, attesting to its conformity with the original design created by Antoni Gaudí.
Dimensions: 52 x 54 x 94 cm
About BD Barcelona
Founded in 1972 in Barcelona, BD Barcelona Design quickly established itself as a leading name in contemporary design thanks to its free-spirited and experimental approach. From its very beginnings, the brand has produced and published the creations of its founders as well as those of their creative circle, operating with complete independence.
A leading figure in Catalan architecture, Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) is renowned for his innovative approach to form, materials, and craftsmanship. His work, of which the Sagrada Família is the most famous example, continues to influence architects and designers around the world.
Although primarily associated with architecture, Gaudí placed great importance on furniture, which he conceived as a natural extension of his spaces. The Calvet chair illustrates this vision through a sculptural design in which every detail contributes to the balance between function, comfort, and artistic expression.
More than just a seat, the Calvet chair is a testament to Spain’s design heritage and the artisanal craftsmanship that has accompanied Gaudí’s work for over a century.
