Brutalist Big Bench by Denis Milovanov

This wooden bench is designed by the artist Denis Milovanov.

A bench sculpted from nature

This monumental bench by Denis Milovanov blurs the boundary between furniture and sculpture. Crafted from solid oak, its powerful silhouette appears as though it has been carved directly from a massive tree trunk, preserving the raw beauty and strength of the material. The result is strikingly primitive yet sophisticated, a piece that feels deeply connected to nature while possessing a distinctly contemporary and brutalist character.

The generous proportions and sculptural form create an immediate visual impact. Every cut, groove, and surface accentuates the organic nature of wood, revealing textures and patterns that cannot be replicated. Rather than hiding the material’s imperfections, the design embraces them, transforming natural irregularities into part of the bench’s identity.

Crafted trough traditional techniques

Produced by Denis Milovanov, head of the design studio Soha Concept (COXA), each bench is handcrafted using techniques inspired by the wooden architecture of Northern Russia. The solid oak is immersed in boiling linseed oil baths, a traditional process that enhances durability while creating the rich patina for which Soha’s work is known. The wood is then carefully sawn and shaped, exposing layers of grain and texture that give each piece a unique surface expression.

No two benches are identical. Every example develops its own character through the natural variations of the oak, making each one a true one-of-a-kind object. The combination of artisanal craftsmanship, traditional treatment methods, and monumental form results in a piece that feels timeless, authentic, and deeply rooted in material culture.

The statement piece of your interior

Whether placed in a contemporary living room, an entrance hall, a hospitality project or an outdoor setting, this bench transforms its surroundings. Its architectural presence introduces a new perspective to the space, creating a focal point that feels both ancient and modern. The warm tones of the linseed-oiled oak contrast beautifully with concrete, stone, glass and metal, making it particularly suited to minimalist, wabi-sabi, brutalist, rustic and contemporary interiors.

The bench embodies authenticity, craftsmanship, and the enduring beauty of natural materials. It challenges conventional furniture design and offers a powerful reminder of the relationship between nature, architecture, and human craftsmanship.
