Cosmos Coffee Table by Obstacles

The Cosmos coffee table is a standout piece of furniture born from a collaboration between Studio Obstacles and Spanish artist Yoyo Balagué. Inspired by the artist’s work with pit-fired ceramics, this sculptural table brings together solid oak and raw clay in a truly unique composition. The guiding idea behind the project was to blend organic materials with a geometric design language, resulting in a contemporary coffee table with strong character and presence. Each Cosmos table is crafted from FSC-certified European solid oak, carefully selected for its refined grain and minimal knots. The ceramic elements are hand-shaped by Yoyo Balagué using a traditional pit-firing technique, then chosen in close collaboration with the studio to ensure a perfect balance between wood and ceramic. The table’s final finish is developed to reflect the individual character of each ceramic piece, giving rise to a singular piece of furniture that is both functional and sculptural. As a true centerpiece for the living room, this oak and ceramic coffee table embodies the spirit of Studio Obstacles: minimalist design, honest materials, and meticulous craftsmanship at every stage of production.

Each coffee table, desk, or chair is meticulously made in Spain, in traditional woodworking ateliers, following a precise and carefully controlled manufacturing process led by the Obstacles team.

Obstacles sources only the highest-grade FSC-certified European oak, selecting sections of the trunk with unique grain patterns and minimal knots. Thanks to an innovative joinery system, the use of glue is minimized, allowing the wood to naturally adapt over time without compromising its stability. The pigments and varnishes used for the finishes are all-natural, ensuring each piece is ethically produced and environmentally responsible, seamlessly combining quality, aesthetics, and sustainability.
