CarmWorks
Camilo Andres Rodriguez Marquez is a Colombian artist and specialist in woodworking. He founded CarmWorks Studio in 2015, the design studio is based in Bogota, Colombia. CarmWorks designs furniture and decorative objects mainly in oak and cedar wood. A collection of wooden furniture that shows geometric chairs, large tables, minimalist consoles and rounded stools.
The multiple pieces of furniture are often made of burnt wood. The artist is inspired by the traditional Japanese technique of Yakisugi, which means “burnt cedar”. This finishing technique is used to protect the wood from deterioration over time. In CarmWorks Studio, wooden furniture is first treated by charring, then by applying natural oils and finally each piece of furniture is treated with a mixture of lacquer and matte enamel. This guarantees a sustainable protection against UV light, in order to make all furniture suitable for outdoor use.
The CarmWorks vision of design is based on three principles, nothing lasts, nothing is completed and nothing is perfect. The artisans carefully treat the wood, a long process that makes each piece unique. The objective is to make a raw and natural furniture. The studio’s philosophy is based on the Japanese concept of Wabi-sabi and emphasizes the imperfection of things. For instance, the Abraxa, Dagon and Marques chairs reflect the influence of oriental style and the Coba stools, Nebza sculptures and Maca chairs show Camilo’s connection with Colombian and Mexican cultures. These pre-Hispanic references are expressed in simple geometrical shapes.
